We took the afternoon to tour a friends organic beef farm. Jonny had fun (as did I) chasing chickens, running through fields, falling in mud puddles, looking for cows and dodging their patties. Enjoy!

Jonny invited 3 friends to join him for a celebration at the zoo this year. Sophie, Regan and David came along for a Safari Hunt (thanks to Shanna, Dana, and Momma Sue for chaperoning). They had clues to solve to find the right animals around the zoo ending with a bug collectors kit. Super fun!

Boy does Jonny love trains! Grandma and Grandpa Bakke treated us to the Royal Gorge train ride in Canon City. All Jonny wanted to do was stand in the open air car and watch as the train railed on. He also lost his shoe off the train...awe memories!

Jireh 3 days old - July 2010

Here are some close-up pictures of our new boy. He is very content, just eating and sleeping the day away. There is not much news, except that we are all adjusting to our new sleep schedules.

We've been watching Jonny closely to make sure he is doing well during this transition. As you can see in the video below, he is a mixed bag of interest and unsure-ness.

Day Two! Brother Meets Brother

Jonny meets his brother for the first time. He was very curious, but didn't want to touch for a little while. By the end, we had to curb his desire to touch the baby!

Jonny talks about telling his brother not to take his toys. It seems to be really bothering him, since he brings it up every few minutes. We gently remind and encourage him that he should share his toys, and help his little brother learn about the world.

Mom is recovering very well, and getting lots of time with the baby.

We arrived at the hospital at about noon, already 7 cm dialated! We were blessed to get a wonderful nurse named Nikki. She was very patient and helpful, and took plenty of time with us. After the baby was born, we found out that it was also her birthday!

Mim's mom, Sue, was there every step of the way. Another big blessing to have all the help and support for Mim during labor.

The smiles lasted surprizingly long! It wasn't until the last hour or so that it became incredibly difficult. Mim did such an amazing job.

The baby came head-first as expected, but he also had his hand up by his face. This caused increased pain and complications, causing some damage to Mim's tissues.

At 6:53 pm Jireh Nathaniel was born at 7 lbs, 11 oz. He cried right away, and was very active. Mim was able to hold him for a short time before they completed the procedures.

We believe he has Mim's nose, but JJ's ears. He is very healthy, and latched on to mom within seconds. No messing around when it comes to food. That's my kid!

Here is a picture with our doula Heather, who was also such a blessing! She was very knowlegeable and helpful throughout the day, and helped to keep things going as Mim wanted.

A beautiful zoo day in June! Jonny loves the animals, especially the lions, tigers, birds, elephants, and Nemo the fish. Don't let it fool you though... the real reason he likes the zoo is because he can run around and watch the people.

These pictures were taken on July 12th, so you can see the belly just before the birth. There is no news yet... but one of us is starting to move really slowly.

We often frequent the zoo to learn about our wonderful world. There are a few spots where you can get very close to the animals, such as this spot by the Amur Tigers. Other favorites are the penguins, turtles, bugs, and Nemo and the other fish.

Jonny is getting ready for "Wear Your Favorite Team Jersey" day. He is wearing the Broncos shirt that Robbie gave him.

There are moments when it is quite evident that our "cute little baby" is growing up into an "adventurous boy." He is developing quite a humor, and likes to tease mom and dad now.

Jonny is holding Uncle Dave's toy car. He loved living with Uncle Dave for the past year, and often asks when he will come back home.

We spent this Easter in Las Vegas with the family... the whole family! Here we are eating at a wonderful restaurant called Lindo Michoacan. Very fine service, and delicious flavors! It is on my list of must-visits in Las Vegas. http://www.lindomichoacan.com/

The baby was very active at the doctors office earlier this week. Since we just found out that we were expecting a few weeks ago, we didn't realize how far along the baby was! We have already completed our first trimester!

In this side profile, the baby's head is down to the left. You can see the head, nose, ribs (bright white) and arm and hand.

This one shows the heartbeat. Remember you can click on the images to see them full-size.

Here we are looking more at the front of the baby, but its head is turned to the side to suck the thumb. The jaw bone is in bright white.

Here is another side profile, showing the size of the head to be similar to the size of the torso. A leg and arm are both visible.

It is too early to determine if our baby is a boy or girl, but we can see that it has mom's nose! Jonny had dad's nose, and it was pretty evident in his sonograms...

We had so much fun this Easter. We dyed some eggs, went to church, opened some goodies, and joined in on an exciting egg hunt at our friends the Jeffery's. God is so good! We are blessed that he would send His son to die on the cross so that we can spend eternity with Him. We are reminded this Easter that Jesus is Alive and He is bigger than any of our problems (or this economy). Praise His name!

The first two items aren't really in Rome, but they were just prior to the trip. There are only a few pictures in Rome of Jonny because I (dad) had the camera on the school field trips most of the time, and Mim relied on her parent's camera. So we will have to get some pictures from them at some point.

This is inside the Duomo in Florence. It has an amazingly intricate front facade, and a humbly decorated interior.

These photos are from our trip to Assisi. It is another hilltop city in the center of Italy with evidence of Roman Empire influene. This is also where St. Francis of Assisi was and is buried.

This is taken overlooking an old Roman amphitheater. All you can really see anymore is the basic shape of the structure since the current buildings were build on top of it as a foundation. It's circular like the Colluseum in Rome, but much smaller.

Here we are on top of the defense wall, overlooking the valley. JJ, Paul, Sue, Mim and Jonny. We are smiling, but worrying that the wind doesn't blow the camera off of the flag pole where we have it cleverly balanced. I realize this in the only picture where you can see Jonny's face. This is because the photographer was also largely his personal transport.

Sammy and Jonny hit it off really well. Sammy was showing Jonny how to crash the toys down the slide so they bang into each other at the bottom. This photo was taken on the ride up to the mountains above Turino. On the way home, Jonny reached over and held Sammy's hand for about 10 minutes.

We had a wonderful few days in Venice with Nonna and Nonno! (Grandma and Papa) Most think of the canals when thinking of Venice, but unless you've been there, you don't realize that much of your time is spent in these tiny little streets and piazzas. There are many photo opportunities around the city, as it seems every new view could be a post card. There is much shopping and eating, and many things to see. We are glad to be back home now... Venice wears you out!!

Our friends Bob and Melissa from Syracuse came to visit for a week. We took a trip to the beach in Viareggio where Jonny experienced sand and waves for the first time. We think he was hesitant because normally we don't let him get dirty like that. So much fun!

Cinque Terre

On Sunday, Sept. 28th we did a day trip to Cinque Terre with our friend Holly, one of JJ's classmates. I would definitely like to go back and hopefully spend more than one day there. It is like a dream with these 5 towns perched up on the hillside. We hiked between the first, second and third towns then took a train to the fourth town and a ferry boat to the fifth. What an amazing sight to see. God is so amazing!

We have officially been in Italy for three weeks now...it's amazing how fast our time here is passing by. I can't believe it's almost October.

We finally feel settled into our apartment and we now know where to buy groceries and how to use the bus system to get around town. Jonny has adjusted pretty well. Italians love babies...well most people love babies, so he's always getting something free.

School is going well for JJ and I am taking an Italian class which is sort of helping me speak to the locals. This is definitely an easier semester which gives us time to get out and see Florence. Today we traveled to the Piazza San Marco museum and the Ponte Vecchio "Old Bridge" famous for gold jewelry. It was pretty rainy so we didn't get the best pictures.

Can you believe we are in Italy? Thanks to everyones prayers, we arrived in Florence on Tuesday, September 2nd without any snags and smooth flying...I love it! We spent the first couple of days orientating ourselves with the city and looking for an apartment.
